Specs wise, the new LG GW990 could very well be a tablet pc accessories with its high speed processor and large touch screen. Most interesting of all is LG’s choice of operating systems. Straying from the trend of using the new Android OS for high end mobile phones, the GW990 uses the Linux based Moblin operating system instead.
Size-wise, this device is one big phone, thanks to the 4.8 inch touch screen; the overall dimensions of the phone are pushed wider than what you would normally expect. The big bonus to having a lot of space is that the phone also packs a lot of features and power. Just looking at the numbers, this is already more than just a mobile phone, but not quite a tablet pc accessories. Whether the world needs another hybrid device however, remains to be seen.
Known Specs
While the biggest hardware spec here is the new processor, let put that topic aside for later. Anyway, this mobile phone is certainly large. Compared to the iPhone which fits a little over the palm of an average hand, this new LG behemoth will cover your whole hand. The device comes with a built in 16GB of flash as well as 512 MB of RAM. That’s plenty of memory, seems like the device will be able to do more than just multi tasking. With large RAM it should be able to handle some pretty impressive games and applications
The screen, as mentioned, is a whooping 4.8 inches diagonally. The resolution for the screen is set to be at 1024 x 480 making it one of the highest resolution screens available. The resolution is perfect for viewing the 720p HD videos you can record with the phone’s 5 mega pixel camera. The screen and the phone’s powerful new processor will certainly need lots of power, and the 1850 mAh battery promises to give lots of usage time.
The Moorestown and the new Intel Atom
Of course, all that hardware needs some serious processing power. This is where the new Intel Atom comes in. For those lucky enough to attend the Consumer Electronics Show held early January in Las Vegas, Intel finally showed off the latest incarnation of its Atom Chip.
Moorestown is promising to be faster and more efficient than any ARM made chip, some are even speculating that it can give a dual core ARM Cortex A9 a run for its money. Anyway, this new Intel Atom will be running at the heart of the LG GW990 at a yet to be determined speed. Those who got to try the device on the CES floor report that the new LG phone is fast and it is also able to handle multi tasking quite easily. The best part about this is that the new Atom is reported to be very power-efficient, making it consume only 10% of the power that older chips needed.
System on a Chip
While not much has been revealed about Moorestown SoC (system on a chip), the Moblin is a familiar platform. The demonstration showed the OS has been skinned with LG’s very own S-Class user interface that will make using this device a very comfortable experience for LG users.
